The predominant features of the catchment area include the clarity and purity of the waters, the presence of lush vegetation, the enchanting backdrop of high reliefs and an extraordinary variety of natural beauty. In the foreground there is the spectacular Marmore Falls, with its suggestive roar of water. The Valnerina valley itself offers one of the most striking landscapes in Umbria, with its narrow, rocky gorges, medieval villages and an extraordinary wealth of woods.
The entire route of the river is lined with lush vegetation, dominated by willows, poplars and alders. The fish fauna is rich, with species such as trout and crawfish. Several bird species can be spotted along the banks, including the peregrine falcon and, especially in mountainous areas such as Coscerno and Aspra, the golden eagle. The reliefs are also inhabited by mammals such as the wild cat and porcupine.
Among the noteworthy emerging environments are the wetlands of Recentino, near Terni and of San Liberatore, between Terni and Nera Montoro, which represent exceptional ecosystems for flora and aquatic fauna, including rare species. These areas have become small oases populated with numerous migratory birds.
